THE ORPHANAGE

THE ORPHANAGE

It was after the Blood Donation Program held at College. We, Club The Xavier members, organized the program successfully. After the program, there were oranges and some bananas left. We started to think about what to do about those remaining. Suddenly, one of the guys proposed to donate it to an orphanage. At first, it seemed to be awkward but later we all agreed to bestow it to a Briddhashram. As we discussed more, we concluded to contribute it to an orphanage that was supported by the Society of Aware Students (SAS).

Sabin Gnawali, General Secretary of SAS as well as Club The Xavier, suggested us to visit the orphanage and children dwelling there. Eight of us went there taking the rest of the fruits. I was feeling a bit clumsy at first but when we arrived there, I was little more excited. Maybe, at the moment, I was feeling like doing a social work that I had never done before. After all, I was keen to communal tasks.

There was a smell of meat cooking with, I think, lots of spices.  Never to mention, I did not like it. Sabin negotiated with the Orphanage in charge, Reshma Subba. She was looking more than happy to see us. Then we were seated to a sofa with due respect. She pointed towards the three of nine orphans through the window, who were busy playing with their toy stuffs. After a minute or two, they were brought to us. They were looking so cute that I could not help myself holding them. We decided to wait for the rest of them, who were at school.

At the same time, we were also asking questions about the orphanage, to Mrs. Subba. She elaborated that the orphanage was opened about a year ago with seven of her friends. But unfortunately, six of them left it and everything was on her responsibility. "I did not give up and continued to operate the orphanage”, she said with a negligible sigh. At the very point, she mentioned that SAS emerged as a helping hand in her campaign to care for orphan children. According to her, the orphanage is still suffering from economic problems. Also, the number of orphans cannot be increased due to lack of capital. She agreed with this saying, "I was recently requested to enroll two orphans but I sadly had to deny, even knowing that they needed my attention”.

When we talked about the children there, it was something funny to hear. Among the three we met with, Gopal was identified as the most stupid. They were also given some punishments for their mistakes. Anyways, they were beyond my expectation. I liked the word ‘Dada’ from them, calling me. It was just a fabulous experience to hear such children talking their own way. We gave some photo shots during the donation and realized that time was really crossing our speculation. Finally, we offered our goodbyes and vowed to come next month, making fresh strategies to help them.
