AS Level 13 Month Rule

A reminder about CIE's 13 Month Rule, which many Centres have enquired about. The 13 Month Rule can be found in syllabuses and also the CIE Handbook for Centres:

Subject to requirements of the particular A Level syllabus, an award in an AS Level syllabus in November 2008 may be used towards the award of an A Level in the same subject in June 2009 and/or November 2009. AS awards obtained prior to the mentioned examination sessions may not be used towards the award of an A Level in June 2009 and/or November 2009.

Centres entering candidates for A Level in these subjects in November 2009 are required to state by means of an entry option, for each candidate for each syllabus, whether:

(a) All the required components for the A Level award are being taken concurrently and no previous AS Level results are to be considered;

(b) All the required components for the A Level award are being taken concurrently but the candidate has also taken the AS Level in the same subject within the previous 13 months which will include:

If entering in November 2009 the AS Level to be counted towards the A Level award would have had to be obtained in November 2008 or June 2009 only. AS Level awards obtained in previous sessions may not be counted towards the award or an A Level in November 2009.

Changes to exam regulations boosts security

Many readers will be aware of changes to the administration of the November 2009 examination session. These changes are part of a project that will increase the security of CIE examinations and ensure that the validity and integrity of CIE examinations continues to be protected around the world.

From June 2010, we will ask Centres to ensure that all candidates are under full Centre supervision at a specified time in the morning and afternoon examination sessions. We will refer to these as Key Times, which will fall between 08.00 – 12.00 and 13.00 – 16.00.

For most Centres, this will make little difference, as the Key Times will fall exactly when examinations would normally be taking place. However, if Centres timetable examinations outside Key Times, they will have to adopt full Centre supervision of candidates.

Key Times will be available online from 17 August and will be published in the Final Timetable (available in September).
